PGCPS – Homeless Education Office
Dedicated to Meeting the Needs of Homeless Children and Youth Mission Statement: Our office provides support to ensure that homeless children and youth have equal access to the same free, appropriate, public education – including public preschool – provided to other Prince George’s County Public school children, with the opportunity to meet the same challenging state content and student performance standards. Every school district is required to have an LEA (Local Education Agency) liaison whose duties include the removal of barriers to the enrollment, attendance and success of homeless children and youth in school.
Who is a Homeless Student? A child who lacks a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence. The child may live in a shelter, a motel, a car, a campground, or on the street. Homeless children may be “doubled-up” with relatives or friends due to a loss of housing, natural disaster, or economic hardship.
